Controlled Atmosphere technology in other markets

The same core CA technology that protects apples and pears through a nine-month storage campaign — nitrogen generation, precise oxygen control, and atmosphere monitoring — solves a surprising range of other problems. We bring that engineering into three adjacent markets.

CA technology in other markets

Oxygen Reduction for Fire Prevention

Active fire prevention by holding a protected space at a permanently reduced oxygen level — typically around 16.8% O₂ — so open flame cannot develop and fire cannot sustain or spread.

Three ingredients are required for fire: oxygen, heat, and fuel. Remove one and combustion cannot start. Oxygen-reduction systems introduce controlled nitrogen into a protected environment to drop O₂ below the ignition threshold for the materials stored there. The atmosphere stays breathable for trained personnel, but it will not support an open flame.

Key benefits

  • Prevents fire rather than fighting it after ignition — no water, no foam, no smoke damage
  • Ideal where sprinklers are unacceptable: archives, museums, data centres, deep-freeze rooms, valuable seed and food stocks
  • Designed and calculated to European standard EN 16750 for oxygen-limitation systems
  • Built on the same VSA nitrogen generators, control software, and 24/7 monitoring used in our CA rooms
  • KIWA-certified system designs available through partner deployments in Europe

Typical applications

  • Cold and deep-freeze storage
  • High-bay and automated warehouses
  • Data centres and server rooms
  • Archives, museums, and fragile collections
  • Seed, sugar, and high-value food storage
  • Paper mills and document storage

High-Altitude Training Solutions

Hypoxic (low-oxygen) training rooms that simulate altitudes up to roughly 5,600 metres — a controlled way for elite and amateur athletes, rehab patients, and mountaineers to benefit from altitude exposure without leaving home.

Training or sleeping at altitude stimulates the body to produce more red blood cells (via erythropoietin / EPO), improving oxygen transport, endurance, and recovery. We design and integrate altitude rooms and chambers using the same nitrogen-generation and O₂-regulation technology that underpins CA storage — just tuned for human physiology instead of fruit.

Key benefits

  • Improved aerobic endurance and oxygen utilization
  • Faster recovery after heavy training or injury rehabilitation
  • Acclimatization before expeditions or high-altitude competitions
  • Applications in health and wellness — cardiovascular support, metabolic conditioning
  • Altitude chambers controlled via an oxygen meter and schedule — set the target altitude, the room holds it
  • ADM cloud app for athletes, coaches, and medical staff to review sessions remotely

Typical applications

  • Elite athlete performance centres
  • Sports clubs and gym altitude rooms
  • Hotel wellness and recovery facilities
  • Rehabilitation and physiotherapy clinics
  • Mountaineering and expedition prep
  • Research labs studying hypoxic response

CATT — Controlled Atmosphere Temperature Treatment

A non-chemical method to kill storage insects inside fruit, vegetables, and other susceptible goods by combining a controlled low-oxygen atmosphere with a tightly controlled temperature profile.

CATT (Controlled Atmosphere Temperature Treatment) is a validated alternative to chemical fumigation. Goods are placed in a gas-tight treatment room; oxygen is driven down, carbon dioxide is raised, and temperature is held at a target profile for a defined period. The combination is lethal to target insect life stages while leaving the product residue-free — which matters for organic production, export markets, and retailers restricting chemical treatments.

Key benefits

  • Chemical-free insect disinfestation — no fumigant residues on product
  • Compatible with organic certification and sensitive export markets
  • Uses the same CA building blocks: gas-tight room, N₂ generation, CO₂ control, analyzers
  • Treatment profiles tailored to target pest and commodity
  • Can be integrated into existing cold storage or packhouse workflows

Typical applications

  • Fresh fruit export quarantine treatments
  • Organic producers avoiding chemical fumigants
  • Grain, nut, and dried-product storage
  • Quarantine treatments for ornamentals and cut flowers
  • Museum and archive pest control (non-toxic alternative to fumigation)
